A long distance telephone call is defined as a call made from outside the local calling area. It takes place when there is significant distance between you and the person you want to talk to. There are different types of long distance calls and these phone calls can occur from across the state, different states or can be an international call. Even though these types of phone calls follow a similar process to place, they are unique and their differences can be confusing. Below are the five types of long distance phone calls most frequently used and some important information you need to know about each one.

Toll-Free

Toll-free numbers are popular for long distance telecommunications. This method of communication is free for the person calling, while the person receiving the call obtains the charge. Businesses and international call services most frequently use toll-free numbers to keep their clientele and associates happy. Most often, you will see toll-free numbers beginning with an 800 area code.

InterLATA

LATA stands for local access and transport area. It is the geographical locations where you can place or receive long distance phone calls. Phone calls made to different LATAs or geographical areas are considered interLATA long distance calls. You can make these calls within the same state or to different states.

IntraLata

IntraLATA phone calls are calls made within the same LATA. This type of long distance phone call requires you to dial the “1” before entering the area code of the individual, even if the area code is similar to your own. Often these types of phone calls will include per-minute toll charges.

Interstate

Interstate phone calls are the most frequent type of long distance phone call. Interstate and interLATA are the same type of long distance phone calls and are calls made between two different geographical locations or states.

International

The most expensive type of phone call is an international call. Depending on where the phone call originates and where the call’s destination is, call rates will vary greatly. Several call services offer cheaper rates for international calls and several different methods for placing an international call. One option available is to dial directly using an access number the provider gives to you and then dialing the phone number. By dialing the access number, you connect to the company’s network.

Some companies feature international callback where you call a provided number and let the phone ring once, then hang up. The company then calls you back and provides you a dial tone to call your desired number. You may also see international calls made through VoIP services or the internet. Regardless, these methods will have much lower rates for international calls.

What About Prepaid Phone Cards?

Many individuals may use prepaid phone cards to avoid the hassle of dealing with a long distance carrier. Even though these cards can carry several benefits including no monthly bills, no installation or technical problems, there can be several hidden fees attached to your card. These fees can range from service fees to call connection fees. Be aware of the type of long distance calls you are making. We recommend reading all terms of use before making any decision.
